The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has released passenger statistics for the Dubai Metro, revealing the busiest stations and overall public transport trends for the first half of 2024.
During this period, 133 million passengers traveled on the red and green lines of the Dubai Metro.
Busiest Metro Stations:
- BurJuman Station: The busiest, with 7.8 million users.
- Union Station: Second busiest, serving 6.3 million passengers.
Red Line Highlights:
- Al Rigga Station: 6.2 million users.
- Mall of the Emirates: 5.6 million users.
- Business Bay: 5.2 million users.
Green Line Highlights
- Sharaf DG Station: Topped the green line with 4.7 million users.
- Baniyas Station: 4.1 million users.
- Stadium Station: 3.3 million users.
Public Transport Trends
- Public Transport Share: The Dubai Metro accounted for 37% of Dubai’s public transport riders.
- Taxis: Made up 27%.
- Public Buses: Accounted for 24.5% of the share.
- Increase in Usage: Public transport usage increased by 6% compared to the same period in 2023 despite the temporary closures of four major metro stations.
Additional Transport Modes:
- Dubai Tram: Transported 4.5 million passengers.
- Public Buses: Served 89.2 million passengers.
- Marine Transport: Used by 9.7 million passengers.
- Shared Mobility: Including e-hail vehicles and on-demand buses, 27.8 million passengers were carried.
- Taxis: Carried 97 million passengers in the first half of 2024.
RTA’s Future Plans:
RTA’s Director General, Mattar Al Tayer, highlighted plans to enhance public transport:
- Strategic Objective: Increase the share of public and shared transport journeys to 25% by 2030.
- Expansion Plans: The total number of Dubai Metro stations is set to more than double from 64 to 140 stations by 2040.
- Infrastructure Development: Continuous improvement of road networks, public transport, and shared mobility options to reduce reliance on private vehicles.
These developments are part of RTA’s commitment to making public transport more integrated and accessible across Dubai, focusing on sustainable mobility and infrastructure efficiency.
