Travelers flying through European airports should be aware of a significant change in security regulations starting September 2024. The 100ml limit on liquids in hand luggage, a rule familiar to frequent travelers, has been reinstated due to concerns about the reliability of new security scanners.

Reversal of Recent Technological Advancements:

This reversal comes after European airports introduced advanced scanners designed to ease travel restrictions. These scanners allow passengers to carry larger volumes of liquids and electronic devices without the need for separate screening.

These scanners were initially celebrated for streamlining the often stressful airport security process. However, the European Commission has expressed doubts about their accuracy, particularly regarding the measurement of containers holding more than 330ml.

Impact on Airports and Passengers:

Brussels’ Zaventem Airport led the call for returning to the old scanners and reintroducing liquid restrictions across Europe. As a result, passengers are again required to adhere to the 100ml liquid limit, with strict guidelines on how liquids must be carried through security.

New EU Rules on Liquids in Hand Luggage:

According to the updated rules on the official European Union website:

  • Personal Liquids: Liquids, including aerosols, drinks, toothpaste, cosmetics, and gels, must be taken in a transparent plastic bag no larger than one (1) liter. Each container within this bag must not exceed 100ml. Containers exceeding 100ml must be placed in checked luggage. Exceptions to this rule include medicines and baby food.
  • Duty-Free Liquids: Duty-free liquids purchased from any airport or airline may be carried in hand luggage but must remain sealed in the official security bag with the receipt enclosed. This bag must not be opened until the passenger reaches their final destination. If security officers need to open the bag for screening, the liquids must be resealed in a new security bag if the passenger travels to another destination.

What This Means for Travelers:

The reintroduction of the 100ml liquid limit means travelers must again be vigilant when packing their hand luggage. While the change may cause some inconvenience, it’s necessary to ensure airport security until the reliability of the new scanners can be fully verified. Travelers are urged to check the latest guidelines before traveling and prepare accordingly to avoid delays at security checkpoints.
