In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a notable shift in the cyber threat landscape emerged in 2023, as highlighted by Kaspersky’s telemetry data. While overall cyber threats decreased by 20 percent, a surge in targeted attacks underscored the need for heightened vigilance and innovative cybersecurity strategies.
During the 9th annual Cyber Security Weekend – META 2024, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, experts from Kaspersky delved into the evolving threat landscape in the UAE and the wider region. With a spotlight on emerging technologies like AI and their influence on modern threats, discussions delved deep into the intricacies of safeguarding against cyber adversaries.
One of the central themes revolved around the security of critical infrastructure, particularly in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Here, Kaspersky’s Cyber Immunity approach emerged as a beacon of defense, offering solutions designed to thwart even the most sophisticated cyber attacks.
Examining the UAE’s threat landscape revealed a nuanced picture. While the overall volume of cyber threats saw a decline, certain categories witnessed alarming increases. Social engineering attacks, such as phishing, surged by 70 percent, highlighting the persistent threat posed by human manipulation tactics. Additionally, exploits targeting specific vulnerabilities in systems rose by 53 percent, demonstrating the agility of cybercriminals in exploiting weaknesses.
Ransomware, a pervasive menace in the digital realm, saw an 86 percent increase in attacks, underlining the urgent need for robust defense mechanisms. Similarly, spyware and backdoor attacks experienced notable upticks, posing significant risks to individuals and organizations alike.
Beyond the UAE, a regional analysis of online threats unveiled varying degrees of impact across different countries. Turkey led the pack with the highest number of users affected, followed closely by Kenya, Qatar, and South Africa. However, Oman and Egypt reported relatively fewer instances of online threats, suggesting divergent cybersecurity landscapes across the region.
Amidst these challenges, Kaspersky reported a 6 percent growth in B2B sales in the Middle East region in 2023, reflecting the increasing commitment of organizations to bolster their cybersecurity posture. Notably, the company successfully blocked a total of 30 million threats in the UAE alone, underscoring the efficacy of proactive defense measures.
