Abu Dhabi Falconry Season Kicks Off on October 20: Licences and Regulations Announced

UAE's Beloved Falconry Tradition Resumes with Focus on Sustainability and Responsible Hunting Practices

Traditional Sport Enters New Season with Strict Environmental Controls to Preserve Wildlife and Ensure Responsible Hunting Practices

Falconry season in Abu Dhabi is set to commence on October 20, 2024, with authorities emphasizing the importance of adhering to specific legal and environmental regulations. Licensed falconers will be permitted to hunt captive-bred Houbara bustards until January 20, 2025, under the supervision of the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD).

The EAD has outlined regulations that restrict hunting to open areas at least 2 kilometers away from roads, private properties, forests, protected areas, petroleum and military sites, as well as residential zones. This initiative aims to preserve local wildlife while allowing enthusiasts to engage in this traditional sport, known locally as Al Saqara.

To participate in falconry, individuals must obtain a falconry licence, which is issued according to the relevant hunting laws. Applicants must be UAE citizens, at least 18 years of age, and any falcons used in the hunt must be registered with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE).

Key Regulations for Falconry Season

  • Application Process: Falconers must apply for a traditional hunting licence through the TAMM platform, adhering to all environmental requirements.
  • Hunting Restrictions: Hunting is permitted only between sunrise and sunset, and hunters are required to present their licences upon request by authorities.
  • Prohibitions: The law strictly prohibits the hunting of all wild animals, birds, and reptiles, as well as causing any disturbance to them. Vehicles are not allowed on vegetation to prevent damage to the environment.
  • Personal Responsibility: Hunting must be conducted solely by the licensee; transferring the licence to another person is not permitted.

Falconry is a cherished aspect of Emirati culture, deeply rooted in tradition. Historically, falcons were captured and trained to hunt, providing sustenance for families during the winter months. The upcoming season not only celebrates this rich heritage but also highlights the importance of responsible and sustainable practices in the sport.

As the season unfolds, the EAD continues to encourage all participants to respect wildlife and adhere to the regulations, ensuring that falconry remains a sustainable and valued tradition for generations to come.
