Innovative Tool Empowers People of Determination with Essential Resources and Information
Dubai is stepping into the spotlight as a global leader in accessibility with the launch of its new Accessibility App, unveiled at the AccessAbilities Expo in October. This groundbreaking initiative aims to simplify travel and daily living for individuals with disabilities, particularly those with sensory needs, by providing crucial information about accessible venues across the city.
Developed through a collaboration between the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) and the Department of Economy and Tourism, the app is built on a successful model from North America and has taken approximately two years to develop. Myron Pincomb, CEO and board chairman of IBCCES, elaborates on the app’s features and its potential impact on enhancing the quality of life for People of Determination (POD).
Navigating Dubai with Confidence
The Accessibility App serves as a comprehensive tool, offering a directory of nearly 200 certified locations, including around 860 hotels and 60 attractions such as the airport and public beaches. Users can easily find information about specific accommodations available at each venue, such as Braille menus, wheelchair ramps, and sensory guides tailored for individuals with autism.
Pincomb highlights, “When you’re in Dubai and you pull up the app, you’re going to see all the places that have been trained and certified. You can choose a location like the Burj Khalifa, and access vital information including hours of operation and available facilities for individuals of determination.”
Specialized Features for Diverse Needs
The app includes a variety of specialized features designed to cater to the unique requirements of its users. An autism and sensory button allows users to filter companies trained specifically to support those with autism. Furthermore, the app highlights locations equipped with closed loop hearing systems, which connect directly to hearing aids and cochlear implants, enhancing communication for users with hearing impairments.
Language barriers are also addressed, as the app offers translation services for over 133 languages, making it accessible to a diverse user base. For individuals with mobility challenges, the app allows users to map their route according to their specific mobility devices, ensuring a smooth travel experience.
Additionally, the app provides assistance for users with visual impairments. A live feature connects users with a representative who can help them read menus or navigate airport terminals through the device’s camera.
Supporting Employment and Community Integration
In a significant move to foster inclusivity, the app also lists job opportunities targeted at individuals with disabilities. Currently, there are approximately 1,500 job listings in Dubai, a figure that continues to grow as more businesses engage with the program.
Looking ahead, Pincomb confirms the app’s expansion plans beyond Dubai. “We’re working with several other cities in the GCC, and new features are added daily. In the healthcare sector, we’re collaborating with various clinics to ensure they meet our training and certification standards,” he notes.
Access for All
The Accessibility App is free for users and can be easily downloaded from the Apple Store or Android Store. Businesses interested in participating can reach out to the IBCCES team to enroll in the training and certification program tailored to their specific needs.
As Dubai positions itself as a hub for accessibility, the launch of the Accessibility App marks a significant step forward in promoting an inclusive environment for all residents and visitors. With this innovative tool, the city is not just enhancing travel experiences for people of determination but is also setting a benchmark for accessibility in the region and beyond.
