Jasprit Bumrah Ruled Out of Champions Trophy Due to Back Injury

India Faces a Major Setback as Their Star Pacer Misses the Tournament

A Major Setback for India as Fast-Bowling Ace Misses Crucial Tournament

India’s hopes for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy have taken a significant hit, with pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah ruled out of the tournament due to a persistent lower back injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the news on Tuesday, announcing Harshit Rana as his replacement.

Bumrah, widely regarded as one of the best fast bowlers across all formats, was India’s highest wicket-taker in the recently concluded Test series against Australia, despite the team’s 3-1 defeat. However, back spasms during the final Test in Sydney sidelined him from India’s subsequent five-match T20I series against England, and he has been unable to recover in time for the marquee tournament.

His absence leaves a massive void in India’s bowling attack, with the 31-year-old being a proven match-winner in high-pressure tournaments. Rana, who made his ODI debut against England earlier this month and has taken four wickets in two matches, will now step into Bumrah’s shoes on the big stage.

Additionally, the BCCI announced another squad change, bringing in spinner Varun Chakaravarthy—who impressed with 14 wickets in the recent T20I series against England—to replace batter Yashasvi Jaiswal.

India, placed in Group A of the Champions Trophy, will open their campaign against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20. The highly anticipated clash against defending champions and arch-rivals Pakistan follows, before they conclude the group stage with a showdown against New Zealand.

India’s Champions Trophy Squad:

Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja.

With a reshuffled squad and key players missing, India faces an uphill battle in their quest for Champions Trophy glory. Fans will be eager to see how the team adapts to these setbacks as they chase silverware on the global stage.
