Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Tesla Explore Potential $3.5 Trillion Merger

The proposed deal could create one of the world’s largest corporate groups, combining electric vehicles, space technology, satellite internet and artificial intelligence. However, approval remains uncertain.

Elon Musk has confirmed that SpaceX and Tesla have formed independent special committees to examine a potential merger, a move that could create one of the largest corporate combinations in history.

Speaking during SpaceX’s third-quarter earnings call on Tuesday, October 20, Musk said he believes there is considerable merit in combining the two companies. However, he stressed that no agreement has been reached and that any deal would require shareholder support.

A merger could result in a combined company valued at approximately $3.5 trillion, according to current estimates. Such a transaction would bring together SpaceX’s rocket and satellite operations with Tesla’s electric vehicles, autonomous-driving technology and robotics ambitions.

SpaceX and Tesla Merger: What Elon Musk Said

Musk described a potential merger as a promising idea, pointing to the companies’ growing investments in artificial intelligence and related technologies.

Both businesses are pursuing AI-driven initiatives, creating opportunities for collaboration in computing infrastructure, software development and advanced manufacturing.

However, Musk cautioned against treating the proposed deal as a certainty. He said the independent committees must evaluate the proposal before any recommendation can be put to shareholders.

Musk also acknowledged that he has a conflict of interest because he leads both companies. As a result, he is not participating in the special committees’ discussions.

The proposal faces significant approval hurdles, particularly at Tesla, where shareholder support will be essential before any transaction can proceed.

A Potential $3.5 Trillion Corporate Giant

If approved, the merger could rank among the largest corporate transactions ever attempted.

SpaceX brings its launch business, Starlink satellite-internet network and expanding artificial intelligence operations. Tesla contributes its electric-vehicle business, autonomous-driving technology, robotics programme and manufacturing capabilities.

Supporters of a combination could point to opportunities for sharing technology, improving capital efficiency and accelerating AI development. However, the scale of the proposed transaction would also raise questions about corporate governance, valuation, regulatory oversight and how the interests of shareholders in both companies would be protected.

The estimated $3.5 trillion valuation remains a projection rather than a confirmed value for a combined business.

SpaceX Reports $4.4 Billion Quarterly Profit

The merger discussions emerged alongside strong financial results from SpaceX.

The company reported $14.6 billion in revenue for the July–September 2026 quarter, representing a 161% increase from the same period a year earlier. Net income reached $4.4 billion, compared with a $1.1 billion loss in the year-ago quarter.

SpaceX attributed its performance to growth in its artificial intelligence and connectivity businesses, including its satellite-internet operations. The results marked a significant financial turnaround for the company following its public listing earlier in the year.

The strong earnings performance has added to investor attention surrounding SpaceX’s future growth prospects and the potential benefits of closer ties with Tesla.

Markets React to Merger Speculation

Shares in SpaceX rose approximately 8% in extended trading following the announcement, while Tesla shares also recorded gains.

Investor interest reflects expectations that a combined business could create new opportunities across AI, satellite communications, electric mobility and advanced technology.

Nevertheless, the market response does not guarantee that a deal will be completed. The independent committees must assess the proposal, and shareholders would need to approve a final transaction.

For now, the potential merger remains under consideration. If it advances, it could reshape the business empires built around Musk’s companies—but the final outcome will depend on negotiations, governance requirements and shareholder support.
