Transformative AED 10 Billion Project Aims to Solidify Dubai’s Position as a Global Hub for Events and Exhibitions
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai, has unveiled an ambitious AED 10 billion plan for the expansion of the Dubai Exhibition Centre (DEC). This significant initiative is designed to enhance the DEC’s capacity, making it the largest indoor events venue in the region and increasing the number of large-scale events hosted in Dubai annually from 300 to an impressive 600.
In his announcement, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized Dubai’s commitment to consolidating its status as a global leader in the events and exhibitions sector. He stated, “We are committed to consolidating Dubai’s status as a global leader in the events and exhibitions sector and the top destination for mega events.”
A Comprehensive Three-Phase Development Plan
The expansion project will be executed in three phases, aligning with the broader vision of Expo City Dubai as part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan.
- Phase One: Set for completion by 2026, this initial phase will introduce 140,000 square meters of exhibition space—almost two and a half times the current capacity. This expansion is expected to significantly increase the venue’s ability to accommodate large-scale exhibitions and events.
- Phase Two: Anticipated to conclude by 2028, this phase will further extend the exhibition space to approximately 160,000 square meters. This expansion will also focus on enhancing surrounding infrastructure, including road networks and multi-storey parking facilities.
- Phase Three: The final phase, expected to be completed by 2031, aims to increase the space to 180,000 square meters. It will feature the addition of 26 halls on a single level stretching 1.2 kilometers, capable of hosting one large event or 20 smaller events simultaneously. This phase will also introduce a 300+ room hotel, multiple retail outlets, offices, and an industrial kitchen to support comprehensive in-house operations.
Impact on the City and Beyond
This mega project is anticipated to alleviate traffic congestion during large-scale events and ensure that Dubai remains a leading global destination for event and exhibition hosting. The expansion not only signifies a strategic move to accommodate growing demand but also underscores Dubai’s ambition to enhance its infrastructure and support its residents while promoting economic growth through tourism and business events.
With the expansion of the Dubai Exhibition Centre, the city is set to strengthen its position as a pivotal hub for global events, attracting international visitors and further solidifying its reputation on the world stage.
