Spanish-born golfer sets sights on Olympic glory and inspiring a new generation of Emirati talent.
In a landmark announcement for UAE sports, the UAE Golf Federation has confirmed that international golf sensation Adrian Otaegui will officially represent the country in professional golf tournaments worldwide. The news was revealed during a press conference on Tuesday morning at the National Olympic Committee headquarters in Dubai, marking a significant milestone in the UAE’s sporting ambitions.
Otaegui, who has lived in the UAE for 13 years, will debut under the UAE banner at the Nedbank Challenge in South Africa from December 5-8, signaling the start of an exciting chapter for both the player and the country.
A Legacy of Excellence
Adrian Otaegui’s illustrious career began with success as an amateur, highlighted by victories in the British Boys Championship in 2010 and the Spanish Amateur Championship in 2008, 2010, and 2011. Notably, he also clinched the Paris Open Professional Championship in 2010 while still an amateur.
Turning professional at 19, Otaegui quickly made his mark, earning a spot in the European Tour and accumulating five prestigious DP World Tour titles, including:

Representing UAE on the Global Stage
As an ambassador for the UAE Golf Federation and the national team, Otaegui has actively contributed to the growth of golf in the country. His efforts include training and mentoring Emirati players and supporting the UAE Golfers of Determination Programme, which empowers individuals with disabilities through the sport.
“The UAE is my home. I love its culture and admire how it has transformed into one of the most innovative nations in just 50 years,” said Otaegui. “My dream is to represent the UAE globally, win an Olympic medal, and raise its flag on the podium. At the same time, I want to inspire young Emirati golfers and help develop their skills to create future champions.”
Building the UAE’s Golf Future
At the press conference, Major General Pilot (Ret.) Abdullah Al Hashmi, Vice President of the UAE Golf Federation, emphasized the significance of this partnership.
“This is a remarkable achievement not only for Adrian but also for golf in the UAE,” said Al Hashmi. “Adrian has been a steadfast ambassador for Emirati golf, exemplifying integrity on and off the course. His contributions will undoubtedly elevate the sport to the highest international standards.”
Secretary General Khalid Mubarak Al Shamsi echoed these sentiments, highlighting the Federation’s commitment to developing an elite program that nurtures talent and promotes golf as a cornerstone of the UAE’s sporting identity.
Inspiring a New Generation
Beyond his professional aspirations, Otaegui’s dedication to mentoring young golfers embodies his vision for the UAE’s golfing future. “I believe young Emirati golfers need a role model to inspire them,” he remarked. “I am thrilled to contribute to the growth of the sport and assist the UAE Golf Federation in creating champions who can compete at the highest levels.”
As the UAE prepares for Otaegui’s global debut as its representative, the partnership signifies more than just athletic achievement. It symbolizes a shared vision for excellence, innovation, and the growth of golf in the region.
With Otaegui leading the charge, the UAE’s ambitions to shine on the global sporting stage have never been brighter.
