Dubai-Born Golfer Shoots 67 in Spain, Holds Strong in Top 12 as He Eyes Final Qualifying Stage
Rayhan Thomas, the 24-year-old Dubai-born golfer, has made a strong impression at the DP World Tour Qualifying School in Spain, moving up the leaderboard with an impressive second-round score of 67. His performance at Fontanals Golf Club, one of the four host venues for Stage 2, has placed him in a tie for 12th, within striking distance of the top 22 players who will advance to the final qualifying stage.
After an already solid opening round of 69, Rayhan’s total score now stands at six under par through 36 holes, underscoring his potential to qualify among the top. Leading the field is Slovakian golfer Jakub Hrinda, who holds a two-stroke advantage following rounds of 62 and 66.
Rayhan’s second round was marked by a brilliant display of skill and focus. Starting his day on the 10th hole, he quickly set the tone with birdies on holes 10 and 13. Despite a bogey on the 14th, he recovered with a spectacular run on the front nine, notching five birdies in his final seven holes, ending his round with a score of 32 on the back nine. Reflecting on his performance, Rayhan said, “I was happy with my seven birdies today; I just need to eliminate my three bogeys. I’m in a good position.”
An integral part of Rayhan’s journey is his Scottish caddie, Colin, who Rayhan describes as “like a Scottish father” and an essential part of his team. Colin’s even-keeled approach helps keep Rayhan grounded, providing a calming presence on the course. This partnership extends beyond the fairway, as Colin is connected to Stephen Hubner, Club Manager at Jumeirah Golf Estates, whose family taught at Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club, where Rayhan first developed his passion for golf.
Thomas, a newly turned professional, remains focused on advancing to the final stage, acknowledging the tight competition in the field. “There are a lot of good players out here who all have plenty of game, so there is no room for complacency,” he commented, noting that every shot counts in a field where 26 players are already five under par or better.
The 7,119-yard, par-71 Fontanals course presents a challenging test, and Rayhan is set to tee off for his third round at 10:40 a.m. Spain time. With his eye on the top 22 spots, he remains grounded and aware of the challenge ahead, saying, “I need another solid round on Saturday to keep me within the qualifying score.”
The 2024 DP World Tour Qualifying School continues at Infinitum Golf in Tarragona, Spain, from November 8–13, where successful players will advance from Stage 2, making this round crucial for Rayhan and his fellow competitors.
