Dubai Embraces Smart Urban Mobility: Introduces Free Umbrella Borrowing Service with Nol Cards

RTA's Innovative Collaboration with UmbraCity Enhances Walkability and Sustainability in the Emirate

In a pioneering move towards enhancing urban mobility and sustainability, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced a revolutionary service allowing commuters to borrow umbrellas for free using their nol cards. This innovative initiative, launched in partnership with Canadian company UmbraCity, aims to redefine the concept of public convenience while fostering a culture of sustainability in the bustling metropolis.

Dubbed the ‘smart umbrella service,’ this initiative addresses the common dilemma faced by commuters during rainy days or scorching heat when they find themselves without an umbrella. Available initially at the Al Ghubaiba Bus and Metro station, this three-month pilot project marks a significant step towards creating vibrant, inclusive communities in line with Dubai’s vision of a ’20-minute city.’

The process is simple yet ingenious. Inside the Al Ghubaiba station, commuters will encounter a sleek setup comprising a screen and a box stand labeled as UmbraCity, Umbrella Sharing Network. By tapping their nol cards on the machine attached to the screen, individuals can seamlessly borrow umbrellas free of charge. This not only provides immediate relief from the elements but also promotes sustainable practices by encouraging the reuse of resources.

Khaled Al Awadhi, Director for Transportation Systems at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, emphasized the significance of this collaboration in advancing Dubai’s urban mobility agenda. He stated, “By encouraging the use of smart umbrellas — which are ‘free of cost’ when leased using nol card — the RTA and UmbraCity are contributing to the creation of vibrant, healthy, and inclusive communities across Dubai.”

The partnership between RTA and UmbraCity underscores a shared commitment to sustainable urban development and improved quality of life for residents. Amir Entezari, CEO of UmbraCity, highlighted the importance of such collaborations in fostering sustainable urban mobility. He commented, “This collaboration reflects our mutual dedication to advancing sustainable urban mobility and enhancing the liveability of cities.”

Beyond offering immediate relief to commuters, the smart umbrella service aligns with Dubai’s broader sustainability goals and its aspiration to become a global leader in smart city initiatives. By leveraging technology and fostering innovative partnerships, the emirate continues to set new benchmarks in urban planning and public service delivery.

As the pilot project undergoes evaluation, there is optimism regarding its potential expansion to other stations across Dubai. This underscores the scalability and adaptability of such initiatives in meeting the evolving needs of urban communities. With the smart umbrella service, Dubai not only shields its residents from the elements but also paves the way towards a greener, more resilient future.
