A massive infrastructure project aims to widen a 25-km stretch between Sharjah and Umm Al Quwain, beginning September 2025
In a strategic move to enhance the UAE’s transport infrastructure and ease traffic congestion, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has announced a major expansion project for Emirates Road. With an estimated investment of AED 750 million (approximately $205 million), the development is set to begin in September 2025 and will be carried out over a two-year period.
The project will focus on widening a 25-kilometre stretch of Emirates Road — one of the UAE’s vital arterial highways — from Al Badee Interchange in Sharjah to the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain. The expansion will increase the number of lanes from three to five in each direction, significantly boosting the road’s capacity and improving traffic flow for thousands of daily commuters and freight vehicles.
This upgrade is part of a broader national infrastructure strategy designed to enhance mobility across the Emirates, reduce commute times, and support the country’s growing economic and urban development. Officials say the expansion will not only alleviate existing congestion but also prepare the region for future population and industrial growth.
The Ministry emphasized that the project reflects the UAE’s commitment to building a world-class transportation network and aligning with its vision of sustainable urban development. Once completed, the enhanced Emirates Road is expected to reduce traffic pressure on alternative routes and support seamless connectivity between key northern Emirates.
With construction set to begin in just a few months, residents and businesses can anticipate long-term improvements in road safety, transit efficiency, and regional accessibility — all vital elements in maintaining the UAE’s status as a leading global hub.
