UAE Eyes 6G Services as du and e& Unveil Next-Generation Network Technology

du has introduced commercial U6GHz connectivity on its 5G+ network, while e& UAE is boosting smartphone upload speeds with 2×2 MIMO technology as the country prepares for future 6G services.

The UAE is advancing its next-generation telecommunications ambitions as du and e& UAE introduce network technologies designed to improve connectivity, increase data capacity and support emerging digital applications.

The announcements signal progress towards the country’s longer-term 6G ambitions, although 6G mobile services have not officially arrived. Instead, the latest developments build on 5G-Advanced technology, improving network performance as demand for artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and data-intensive applications grows.

On Tuesday, du announced that it had delivered commercial U6GHz connectivity on its 5G+ network. The operator described the service as a foundation for high-capacity connectivity across homes, businesses and industries.

Meanwhile, e& UAE has introduced a technology upgrade designed to increase smartphone upload speeds threefold, helping users send large files, share videos and interact with data-intensive digital services more efficiently.

du Introduces Commercial U6GHz Connectivity in the UAE

du’s commercial U6GHz deployment represents a significant step in expanding the capacity of its 5G+ network.

U6GHz refers to spectrum in the upper 6GHz range that telecommunications operators can use to deliver additional network capacity. The band is attracting interest as operators seek to accommodate growing data traffic without relying exclusively on existing spectrum resources.

By adding U6GHz connectivity, du aims to support applications that require high data throughput and reliable connections, including cloud services, AI-powered platforms and connected industrial environments.

Saleem Alblooshi, Chief Technology Officer at du, said the technology could create new opportunities for consumers and businesses.

“Placing U6GHz into the hands of customers will be unlocking new opportunities for consumers, businesses and emerging digital applications,” Alblooshi said.

The technology is intended to strengthen the operator’s existing 5G+ infrastructure while preparing its network for increasingly demanding digital services.

What Is U6GHz and Why Does It Matter?

U6GHz is a spectrum band that can provide additional capacity for mobile networks. Its appeal lies in the potential to combine substantial bandwidth with propagation characteristics that can complement existing mobile frequency bands.

For telecommunications operators, additional spectrum can help increase data speeds and accommodate more connected devices, particularly in locations where network demand is high.

The band has attracted international interest for future mobile connectivity, including in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Countries such as China, Brazil and Mexico have also pursued the use of the spectrum for mobile communications.

U6GHz is particularly relevant as AI applications generate more data traffic and businesses increasingly depend on cloud-based systems, connected equipment and real-time digital services.

However, the availability of spectrum alone does not guarantee better performance everywhere. The actual benefits will depend on network deployment, compatible devices, coverage and the capacity of supporting infrastructure.

e& UAE Targets Threefold Increase in Smartphone Upload Speeds

While du is expanding its network capacity through U6GHz, e& UAE is focusing on improving the upload experience for smartphone users.

The operator has introduced 2×2 MIMO technology to support higher upload speeds on its 5.5G network. MIMO, or multiple-input multiple-output, uses multiple transmission and reception paths to improve the way data moves between mobile devices and network infrastructure.

The latest upgrade is designed to increase smartphone upload speeds by up to three times, according to the announcement.

Faster uploads could benefit users who regularly share high-resolution videos, transfer large files or use applications that send data to cloud platforms and AI services.

Marwan bin Shakar, Chief Technology Officer at e& UAE, said mobile usage patterns are changing as smartphones become tools for creating and transmitting content rather than simply consuming it.

“Smartphones are no longer primarily consuming content – they are creating, sharing and increasingly sending richer data to AI and cloud applications in real time,” he said.

“That changes what we need from the network. By bringing this capability, we are increasing upload capacity where it matters.”

The upgrade reflects a broader industry shift towards improving upstream capacity as users generate more content and rely on interactive digital applications.

UAE Telecommunications Operators Prepare for 6G

The developments from du and e& UAE come as telecommunications companies worldwide explore the technologies and infrastructure that could support future 6G networks.

However, the distinction between 5G-Advanced and 6G remains important. The UAE operators’ latest announcements concern improvements to existing network technology, not the official launch of a sixth-generation mobile network.

5G-Advanced builds on 5G through enhancements in network capacity, performance and support for advanced digital applications. U6GHz spectrum and improvements such as MIMO can contribute to that evolution.

By investing in these capabilities, UAE operators can expand the performance of their current networks while developing experience with technologies that may prove relevant to future mobile standards.

The transition to 6G will require further technical development, standardisation and infrastructure deployment before commercial services become widely available.

AI and Cloud Computing Drive Demand for Faster Networks

The growing use of AI and cloud applications is changing the requirements placed on telecommunications networks.

Many traditional mobile activities, such as browsing websites and streaming videos, depend heavily on download capacity. Newer applications increasingly require reliable uploads as users send video, images, voice recordings and other data to cloud-based systems for processing.

Businesses are also adopting connected technologies across manufacturing, logistics and other industries, creating demand for networks that can handle large volumes of data with dependable performance.

du’s U6GHz deployment and e& UAE’s upload-speed improvements address different aspects of that demand. One focuses on expanding spectrum capacity, while the other targets faster data transmission from smartphones.

Together, the developments illustrate how UAE operators are evolving their networks to support increasingly data-intensive digital services.

What the Latest Network Upgrades Mean for UAE Users

For consumers, the potential benefits include faster uploads, improved support for demanding applications and greater network capacity in areas where compatible infrastructure is available.

Businesses could also benefit from stronger connectivity for cloud-based workflows, digital collaboration and connected systems.

Nevertheless, access to the full benefits will depend on factors such as network coverage, device compatibility and service availability. The announced improvements should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every smartphone user will immediately experience the same speed increases.

The UAE’s latest telecommunications developments demonstrate progress towards more advanced mobile connectivity, but they remain part of the evolution of 5G rather than confirmation that commercial 6G services have launched.

As du and e& UAE continue upgrading their infrastructure, the focus is on delivering stronger networks today while preparing for the next generation of mobile technology.
