After a long hiatus, MG has reentered the roadster market with the new MG Cyberster, an electric vehicle (EV) that significantly shifts from the company’s recent focus on affordable family cars.
I had the opportunity to test the Cyberster at its UK launch in Scotland, and it exceeded expectations in performance and style.
The Cyberster’s design closely follows the original concept unveiled at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show.
It retains its distinctive scissor doors, adding a touch of flair and facilitating easier access to the low-slung sports car. The production model features sleek lines and a modern aesthetic, making it a head-turner.
The MG Cyberster comes in two base models:
Both models share high-end trim and technology features, with options for different exterior colors and interior finishes.
The Cyberster is a two-seater with a low and reclined driving position typical of roadsters. The interior options include a sober grey or flashy black and red, utilizing synthetic leather and Alcantara.
The seats are electrically adjustable and heated and feature memory functions, though they lack ventilation. The convertible soft top can be raised or lowered in 15 seconds at speeds up to 30 mph.
The Cyberster delivers impressive performance across both variants. The Trophy model can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 5 seconds, while the GT achieves this in just 3.2 seconds, comparable to a Tesla Model 3 Performance.
Both models offer four driving modes (Comfort, Custom, Sport, and Track) and a “Supersport” mode for maximum power. The Cyberster also features adjustable regenerative braking and single-pedal driving options.
Both the Trophy and GT provide engaging and exhilarating drives. The GT’s all-wheel-drive system offers incredible traction and confidence-inspiring handling, even on wet roads.
The Trophy’s lighter weight offers a more relaxed and nimble driving experience, making it an ideal grand tourer.
Despite being a roadster, the Cyberster offers practical storage. Its 249-liter rear luggage space is sufficient for an overnight bag or a set of golf clubs. There’s also a small space behind the seats for additional storage.
The Cyberster boasts a decent range, with the Trophy model offering up to 316 miles (WLTP) and the GT up to 276 miles. Depending on driving style, real-world driving conditions yield around 170-193 miles.
Charging is capped at 150 kW, allowing a 10-80% recharge in 38 minutes, which is adequate for long journeys with periodic breaks.
