E-scooters have been in the spotlight recently, though not always for positive reasons. Dubai Police announced earlier this year that they had seized 640 e-scooters since July due to dangerous driving and rule violations.

In response, e-scooters and e-bikes have been banned from The Walk in Jumeirah Beach Residences. Notices in both Arabic and English now inform visitors of the ban.

Dubai Community Management explained the decision, stating that the restriction aims to enhance safety, prevent accidents, and preserve the pedestrian-friendly nature of the area.

Current E-Scooter Usage Zones in Dubai:

Despite the recent ban at The Walk, there are numerous areas in Dubai where e-scooters are permitted, including:

  • Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard
  • Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT)
  • Dubai Internet City
  • Al Rigga
  • December 2 Street
  • Palm Jumeirah
  • City Walk
  • Al Qusais (specific zones)
  • Al Mankhool (specific zones)
  • Al Karama (specific zones)
  • Al Twar 1 & 2
  • Umm Suqeim 3
  • Al Garhoud
  • Muhaisnah 3
  • Umm Hurair 1
  • Al Safa 2
  • Al Barsha South 2
  • Al Barsha 3
  • Al Quoz 4
  • Nad Al Sheba 1

E-scooters can be ridden on pavements and cycling tracks without a license. However, if they use them in other areas, riders must have a driving license from the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA).

Key Rules and Regulations:

To ensure safe usage, e-scooter riders should adhere to the following regulations:

  • Apply for a permit via the RTA website.
  • Wear a helmet and a reflective jacket.
  • Avoid reckless driving and adhere to speed limits (typically 15-20 km/h).
  • Do not carry passengers or items that could destabilize the scooter.
  • Dismount at pedestrian crossings.
  • Limit to one rider per e-scooter, aged 16 years or older.
  • Ride only in designated lanes and follow traffic rules and warning signs.
  • Maintain a safe distance from other e-scooters, bikes, and pedestrians.

Violations can result in fines of up to Dhs300 or even confiscation of the e-scooter.

Metro Ban and Operators:

As of March 1, 2024, using e-scooters on the Dubai Metro is prohibited. Four operators manage e-scooter rentals in Dubai: Tier, Lime, Arnab, and Skurrt. Users can rent e-scooters by scanning a QR code on the scooter using the provider’s app.

While e-scooter use is restricted in certain areas, riding is still allowed in many places. Make sure to observe the rules to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
