Born in Paris, France, Jean-David Malat is a celebrated London-based art dealer and curator with a passion for unearthing contemporary talent and guiding it to global recognition. With over two decades of expertise in the art industry, Malat’s career reflects a rare blend of academic training and hands-on immersion. Although he trained at the esteemed Sotheby’s, Malat consistently underscores the power of real-world experience over formal education when it comes to understanding and shaping the art world.
In June 2018, Jean-David Malat brought his vision to life with the launch of JD Malat Gallery in the prestigious Mayfair district of London, located at 30 Davies Street. A space dedicated to contemporary art, the gallery quickly established itself as a leading platform representing over twenty international artists working across a wide range of media—painting, sculpture, video, and photography.
More than a space to view art, JD Malat Gallery has become a cornerstone of the contemporary art scene in London, known for its commitment to promoting both established and emerging talents. With a rich exhibition program and active participation in international art fairs, the gallery offers artists a significant global stage to share their work.
Carrying his mission beyond Europe, Jean-David Malat expanded to the Middle East with the opening of a second JD Malat Gallery in January 2025. This new gallery, strategically located on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard in Downtown Dubai—just steps away from cultural landmarks like the Burj Khalifa and Dubai Opera—marks a major step in bridging Western and Middle Eastern art markets.
Spanning 1,700 square feet, the Dubai gallery made a compelling entrance with its inaugural exhibition, “Carte Blanche.” This group show featured works by fourteen international artists including Kojo Marfo, Conrad Jon Godly, and Masayoshi Nojo, showcasing the gallery’s ongoing commitment to cultural diversity and contemporary innovation.
At the heart of Jean-David Malat’s work is a philosophy built on personal relationships and experiential engagement. Unlike many in the field who rely heavily on academic credentials, Malat places his trust in authenticity, intuition, and the power of direct interaction—both with artists and collectors.
His unique approach has led to high-profile collaborations with international museums and foundations, as well as significant achievements in both the primary and secondary art markets. More than just a dealer, Malat is a mentor and connector, guiding careers and opening doors for artists worldwide.
With two flagship galleries—one in the cultural heart of London and another in the vibrant artistic scene of Dubai—Jean-David Malat continues to be a pivotal figure in the contemporary art world. His mission is clear: to give artists, whether emerging or established, a meaningful platform that transcends borders.
Through curated exhibitions, strategic global participation, and an unwavering belief in the artists he represents, Malat is redefining what it means to be a modern art dealer. His legacy is not only in the masterpieces he brings to collectors but in the careers he builds and the cultural conversations he helps shape.
