TikTok star Chris Olsen is nervously excited to open for his bestie Meghan Trainor on tour!
In an interview with PEOPLE, the internet personality shared his thoughts on performing as a support act for the “Made You Look” singer in September. Given his past experiences with stage fright, Olsen sought medical support to calm his nerves.
Overcoming Stage Fright:
“The last time I performed in musical theater school, I lost feeling in my hands because I got so nervous,” says Olsen, who received a degree from the prestigious Boston Conservatory at Berklee in 2021. “That was something that would happen often.”
While on tour with Trainor, he’ll be playing much bigger venues, including New York City’s Madison Square Garden, which Olsen describes as “a huge pinch-me moment.” To manage his nervousness, he wanted medical intervention before hitting the stage.
Medical Support:
“When this got announced, I got prescribed beta blockers so I could not have a heart attack while I was up there,” he says. “I’m very nervous.”
“I do know that right before I go up there, I’ll probably piss myself, but then I’ll use that as part of the act,” Olsen jokes.
Friendship with Meghan Trainor:
Olsen and Trainor first became friends in 2022 after Olsen appeared on the singer’s podcast. Their friendship has continued ever since, often documented in TikToks made together. He has even become a regular babysitter for Trainor’s two kids while their mom is out of the house.
The Unexpected Offer:
When the “Dear Future Husband” singer first asked Olsen to join her on tour, he didn’t think much of the offer.
“Meghan has a lot of ideas, and she loves just asking me to do things and also throwing out ideas that I know won’t come to fruition,” says Olsen. “So when she said, ‘You should open for me on tour,’ I was like, ‘OK. Totally. Whatever you want, queen.'”
Preparing for the Performance:
As tour rehearsals begin next week, Olsen says he has a better idea of what his act will entail — telling the “story of my life” through a combination of comedy and musical theater.
“While opening for a pop star was never something I trained to do or thought I was going to do, I figured this was a perfect way and vehicle to show off some of the things that I do know how to do while also being fun, having some comedy in there, and interacting with the crowd,” says Olsen. “I’m opening, but it’s not really about me. It’s about getting everybody excited for Meghan.”
He adds jokingly, “And maybe surprise her on stage random nights during her set. So, who knows?”
The Timeless Tour kicks off on Sept. 1. Olsen will be the opening act on Sept. 4.
