Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has revealed an ambitious plan to enhance the city’s public transport network by adding 636 new buses. This initiative aims to support the Dubai Urban Plan 2040.
It aligns with the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to establish a sustainable and resilient public transport system.
Contract Details:
Over the weekend, the RTA awarded a contract worth Dhs1.1 billion to procure the new buses. The fleet will comprise various sizes and specifications, including 450 city service buses, 76 double-decker buses, and 40 electric buses.
The delivery of these buses is scheduled across 2024 and 2025, meaning Dubai’s roads will soon see a significant upgrade in public transport options.
Goals and Vision:
“Our goal is to deliver best-in-class services to public transport users and accommodate the sustained growth of public bus ridership,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of RTA’s Board of Executive Directors. Introducing these new buses is part of the RTA’s broader strategy to achieve zero emissions in public transport by 2050.
This strategy includes converting all buses, taxis, and limousines to zero-emission vehicles, with a target of 100% conversion of public transport buses to electric and hydrogen-powered buses by 2050.
Sustainable and Resilient Transport:
The new buses are designed to be compatible with RTA’s Public Transport Zero Emissions in Dubai 2050 Strategy, ensuring they contribute to the city’s sustainability goals.
This move is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency and environmental friendliness of Dubai’s public transport network, making it a more attractive option for residents and visitors alike.
